    Long-term thermal aging of 2 graphite-polyimide composite materials

    Two graphite/polyimide composite materials were aged in circulating air ovens at temperatures 204 C, 232 C, 260 C, and 288 C for various times up to 25000 hours. The composites were: (1) Celanese Celion 6000 graphite fiber and PMR-15 polyimide resin (Celion/PMR-15) and (2) Celion 6000 graphite fiber and LARC-160 polyimide resin (Celion/LARC-160). Three unidirectional specimen geometries were studied: short beam shear (SBS) specimens, flexure specimens, and 153 mm square panels. The interior regions of the square panels exhibited only minor property degradation. The individually aged SBS and flexure specimens exhibited large reductions in strengths after aging. Both laminate materials cracked and degraded preferentially at the specimen edge perpendicular to the fibers

    Hydrodynamic Simulations of Propagating Warps and Bending Waves In Accretion Discs

    We present the results of a study of propagating warp or bending waves in accretion discs. Three dimensional hydrodynamic simulations were performed using SPH, and the results of these are compared with calculations based on the linear theory of warped discs. We consider primarily the physical regime in which the dimensionless viscosity parameter `alpha' < H/r, the disc aspect ratio, so that bending waves are expected to propagate. We also present calculations in which `alpha' > H/r, where the warps are expected to behave diffusively. Small amplitude perturbations are studied in both Keplerian and slightly non Keplerian discs, and we find that the SPH results can be reasonably well fitted by those of the linear theory. The main results of these calculations are: (1) the warp in Keplerian discs when `alpha' < H/r propagates with little dispersion and damps at a rate expected from estimates of the code viscosity, (2) warps evolve diffusively when `alpha' > H/r, (3) the non Keplerian discs exhibit a substantially more dispersive behaviour of the warps. Initially imposed higher amplitude nonlinear warping disturbances were studied in Keplerian discs. The results indicate that nonlinear warps can lead to the formation of shocks, and that the evolution of the warp becomes less wave-like and more diffusive in character. This work is relevant to the study of the warped accretion discs that may occur around Kerr black holes or in misaligned binary systems. The results indicate that SPH can accurately model the hydrodynamics of warped discs, even when using rather modest numbers of particles.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, to appear in MNRA

    A structured management approach to implementation of health promotion interventions in Head Start.

    Improving the health and health literacy of low-income families is a national public health priority in the United States. The federal Head Start program provides a national infrastructure for implementation of health promotion interventions for young children and their families. The Health Care Institute (HCI) at the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles, developed a structured approach to health promotion training for Head Start grantees using business management principles. This article describes the HCI approach and provides examples of implemented programs and selected outcomes, including knowledge and behavior changes among Head Start staff and families. This prevention-focused training platform has reached 60,000 Head Start families in the United States since its inception in 2001. HCI has demonstrated consistent outcomes in diverse settings and cultures, suggesting both scalability and sustainability

    A high-Reynolds-number seal test facility: Facility description and preliminary test data

    A facility has been developed for testing the leakage and rotordynamic characteristics of interstage-seal configurations for the HPFTP (High Pressure Fuel Turbopump) of the SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engine). Axial Reynolds numbers on the order of 400,000 are realized in the test facility by using a Dupont freon fluid called Halon (CBrF3). The kinematic viscosity of Halon is of the same order as the liquid hydrogen used in the HPFTP.
